There are five main things that you need to focus on...Fatty Acids, Calcium, Iron, Folic Acid and Vitamin D.
Fatty Acids- In order for your baby to have healthy neural and fetal visual development you need fatty acids. You can consume these acids in foods like salad dressings, veggie burgers, canola oil and tofu.
Calcium- Everyone always needs calcium to maintain their bone strength but the same goes for babies. Their skeleton depends on it so consume things like milk, cheese, yogurt, turnip greens, broccoli and almonds. Remember, stay away from soft cheeses.
Iron- Iron will help supply the red blood cells to the placenta. Doctors will warn you that if you consume less than the recomended amount of iron you could run the risk of premature labor or have a baby with low birth weight. Eat foods like ground beef, beans, chicken, pork, apricots, prunes and peaches.
Folic Acid- This helps support the extra blood volume and the growth of your maternal and fetal tissues. It is also very important at decreasing the risk of neural tube defects. The best foods for folic acid are cooked spinach, orange juice, lettuce, peas, corn, raspberries, sweet potatoes, cooked carrots, bananas, grapefruits and breakfast cereals.
Vitamin D- Viatamin D helps your body and intestines absorb calcium and use it the way your body needs it. Options are soy beverages, margarine and egg yolks.
Remember to take a prenatal vitamin. Always ask your doctor what they recommend for you and your situation.
