One Stop Shop For Kids - Pregnancy

What do you need in your hospital bag when delivering your kids?

Having kids: Pregnancy is amazing but at times stressful. As your due date approaches your anxiety builds and you start to wonder is everything ready? Do I have everything I need? Am I prepared mentally, physically and emotionally? As a first time mom you have no idea because every single minute and experience is brand new uncharted territory but women just like you do it every single day so there is no reason to fret.

One major concern for new moms (and dads) is what do you need in your hospital bag for the big day of delivery. There are necessities and then there are niceties.

Necessities:

Your insurance card and drivers license

Your birth plan if you have one - give it to your nurse so they can go over everything with you and explain contingency plans in the event of an emergency so that you are your spouse are comfortable with all the options. Use our printable worksheet

Your paperwork for delivery

Your car seat for your baby-the hospital will not let you leave with your baby unless you have one and more than likely someone from the hospital will check to see that it is installed correctly in your car.

Ponytail holder, bobby pins or headband to keep your hair out of your face during delivery.

Slippers if you want to walk around in the early stages of labor.

Clothes for your baby to leave the hospital. Usually include a hat, socks and mittens. The mittens will protect their face from their long nails.

A distraction. For some women it is a book, movies, photograph or music. This will help you stay calm and focused for delivery.

Baby book so you can write down who came to visit, the important information like height, weight and time of delivery. You also put the hand and footprints away for safe keeping in the book so they do not get bent, lost or damaged.

Diaper bag filled with diapers, wipes and extra clothes in case your baby has a bowel movement on the way home. Your diaper bag will be attached to your hip so you might as well start getting used to carrying it from the get-go.

Camera or video camera so you can capture the first moments and days of your child's life. Even though right now you might think that you do not want teo remember childbirth I promise that you will cherish those memories for years.

Niceties:

Shampoo/conditioner/hair brush/makeup to clean up and feel like a woman again after delivery

Pajamas, sweats or gown to wear after delivery so you do not have to stay in the hospital gown they provide.

Don't forget your partner!

Your significant other will also need a change of clothes if staying overnight with you and your new baby.

His/Her toiletries for brushing teeth,etc

Money for the cafeteria or vending machine because mom might be starving after giving birth.

Tip: Stay in the hospital as long as they allow you to and let your baby sleep in the nursery while you have the help of the nurses. You will have plenty of time for sleepless nights when you get home.

Stretch Marks and Creams
When I was pregnant with my first child I remember having pregnancy concerns...Am I doing this right? Eating enough? Eating too much? Drinking enough water? Etc. I also remember having a shallow and self centered concern...will I get those horrible, dreaded stretch marks (also called striae gravidarum) ???? I knew it was a possibility and if it was meant to be it was meant to be, but there were things I could do to help myself prevent them.
  • Gain enough weight to have a safe and healthy pregnancy but not too much because my skin would "stretch" can cause those unslightly marks on my skin.
  • Make sure to stay hydrated with plenty of water. This helps skin stay healthy and moisturized and it also helps with pregnancy constipation.
  • Make sure to apply lotion on my belly, hips, thighs, breasts and butt morning, noon and night since those are the areas that are most affected and stretched during pregnancy. The cream I used and loved was Bella Mama Belly Butter and Eucerin Calming Itch Cream.
Moms, don't worry if you get stretch marks. They will be a little ugly at first due to the pink or reddish pigment but they will eventually fade and they are worth it in the end.

SPF for your Babies and Kids
As you know your childs skin is very sensitive to the suns rays when they are young. I always put lotion on my son in the morning if I know we will be heading out to shop or play in the sun. I keep the lotion in my diaper bag and a small travel tube in my purse to always make sure that I am prepared.
