Ok, there comes a time in every parents life when they one day say "man I can not wait until there are no more diapers, sterilizing bottles, spoon feeding and lifting my baby in and out of a crib." Well STOP thinking or wishing that! Time flies and your kids will grow faster than you want and you will one day be kicking yourself for every wishing those moments away.
I can remember the day I walked in the rooms of both of my children and found them standing in their cribs. I was so excited yet sad because they were becoming big kids that would soon not need mommy's help as much as they used to. When they started trying to climb out of the crib I knew that I had no choice but transition them to a toddler bed...one because they were ready and two for their safety. I didn't want to wake up to screaming, bumps or bruises on their little heads due to tumbling out trying to escape. I knew they would always be my baby whether they were six months old or sixty years old but it is still bittersweet for most parents.
When it comes time to change you have to know your child. What I mean is do they handle change well or do they need to be gradually introduced? I was lucky that my son saw his new big boy bed and basically said mom put my crib away, I am done with it and he never looked back. For those that need help changing you can set the bed up in the nursery and let them start by taking naps on their new bed during the day until they get comfortable with the new bed and arrangements.
One thing you can purchase is bed rails. If you have a child that squirms and turns around in their crib, well chances are they are going to do the same thing in their new bed so the rails will help protect and keep them comfortable in the new bed. Falling out of the new bed can be traumatic and may make them resist trying the new bed.
Once your child has hit the one year mark start thinking about how you will handle the transition when the time comes. Some are ready by 15 months while others are over 2 years old when they are ready to adjust.
