One thing that I found that was a lifesaver with my newborn son was the Fisher-Price My Little Snugabunny Cradle 'n Swing.

Babies are accustomed to the swaying motion when they are inside their mothers womb. The Papasan Swing helps reinforce that feeling of safety in your newborn with two swinging motions. The swing cradles your baby and moves side-to-side but also can move in a head-to-toe motion.

Babies also like distractions, soft sounds, colors and movements.
