How to deal with unwanted baby advice from in-laws

You are finally pregnant and you are absolutely thrilled and you think that nothing can ruin your joy. Well, get ready because you will soon be bombarded with advice and wisdom from your own parents and your in-laws. Some advice may be welcomed whereas other advice may make you want to scream!

Everyone will want to tell you what to do, for instance, Do not pick that up, Do not eat that, You are eating too much, You are eating too little, You need more sleep, You can ot do that, etc. It is enough to drive you crazy. You have to remember that everyone has their own opinions but that doesn't necessarily make them the right options for you. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns or questions because they get the same questions and concerns everyday so they are abreast on the newest tips, trends and concerns. What your mother and mother-in-law did thirty years ago when you and your partner were born may be and probably is totally different than what you should do today as a mother-to-be.

Calmly tell the giver of the unwanted advice that while you thank them for their opinion and concern, you have spoken with your partner and your caregiver and all agree that things should be done the way you are doing them. You can also just smile, nod in agreement and go about your day. Just because you listened to the advice does not mean that you have to follow it by any means.

Everyone in your life more than likely thinks they are helping you rather than driving you crazy so just take the advice and do with it what you want to have a relaxed and enjoyable pregnancy.

Things to ask your pediatrician about your kids

When you are a new mom you learn by advice and trial and error. You never really know if you are doing something right or wrong unless someone points it out to you but hey if what you are doing works for you and your baby it should not matter to you what others think. There are lots of things that you will discuss with your baby's pediatrician during your visits but here are some typical questions and topics you will need to cover.

If your baby was circumcised verify with the doctor that everything is healing correctly. They will have tips to help you clean and care of the wound until it heals.

Discuss the shot schedule your child will receive. If you are worried that they are getting too many shots at once, ask them to space it out. Most doctors are aware of the concerns and will work with you and your desires for your baby but keep in your mind that they also have your baby's best interest at heart and know what they need to do in order to keep your baby healthy.

Make sure that your baby is growing properly and getting enough nutrition through the breastmilk or formula that you are using. If your baby develops an allergy to a food or formula, your pediatrician can also guide you as to how to remedy that problem and make your baby comfortable.

Verify that you know the proper procedure for administering your baby medication meaning the types you use, the dosage and frequency in which to give it.

Ask them for sleeping tips if you and your baby are having difficulty getting adequate rest during the night.

Ask them their recommendations on controlling a fever should your baby wake in the night with a temperature over 100 degrees.

Ask about teething so you know the warning signs. Teething signs can often also be mistaken for a common cold.

All of these things are common things that pediatricians deal with every day so do not hesitate or feel silly about asking them. You never know until you ask and it is always better to be safe rather than sorry.
